Oprah's Church Leads People Astray

THIS BOOK IS FALSE! THIS BOOK IS FALSE!

Ok before I start I want to say I used to like watching Oprah (sometimes). I am very shaken by what I have just learned. The new Oprah Book club book is this book, A new earth. Where do I begin. I wanted to read this book because I thought it would be uplifting and inspiring. But instead it is teaching, "a different creation of earth"(CHAPTER 1 PAGE 1), "There is no one God" "Jesus is not the only way"! Wow I can't believe people all over the world are buying into this propaganda. Very sad but it reminds me of so many scriptures that for told of people being Led Astray! Here are a few:
ALMA 30:12-13
12 And this aAnti-Christ, whose name was Korihor, (and the law could have no hold upon him) began to preach unto the people that there should be bno Christ. And after this manner did he preach, saying:

13 O ye that are bound down under a afoolish and a vain hope, why do ye yoke yourselves with such foolish things? Why do ye look for a Christ? For no man can bknow of anything which is to come.

Deut. 4: 2 (Deut. 12: 32; Prov. 30: 6; Rev. 22: 18-19) Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you.
Deut. 13: 5 hath spoken to turn you away from the Lord.
Job 21: 34 in your answers there remaineth falsehood.
Isa. 30: 10 speak unto us smooth things, prophesy deceits.
Jer. 14: 14 prophets prophesy lies in my name.
Jer. 23: 16 vision of their own heart, and not . . . of the Lord.
Ezek. 13: 22 with lies ye have made the heart of the righteous sad.
Acts 20: 30 shall men arise, speaking perverse things.
Gal. 1: 9 if any man preach any other gospel unto you.
1 Tim. 4: 1 giving heed to . . . doctrines of devils.
2 Pet. 2: 1 shall be false teachers among you.
Rev. 13: 5 speaking great things and blasphemies.
1 Ne. 13: 26 they have taken away from the gospel of the Lamb.
2 Ne. 3: 12 confounding of false doctrines.
2 Ne. 28: 9 shall teach . . . false and vain and foolish doctrines.
2 Ne. 28: 12 because of false teachers, and false doctrine.
Jacob 7: 2 that he might overthrow the doctrine of Christ.
Alma 1: 16 they went forth preaching false doctrines.
Alma 30: 6 preach unto the people against the prophecies.
D&C 10: 28 wo be unto him that lieth to deceive.
D&C 43: 5 receive not the teachings of any that shall come.
D&C 50: 2 false spirits, which have gone forth in the earth, deceiving.
D&C 50: 23 which doth not edify is not of God.
D&C 123: 12 blinded by the subtle craftiness of men.
JS-H 1: 19 professors were all corrupt.
OK there were so many I just could not choose one! Anyway, this experience has made me realize how much time I waste paying attention to things of the world. I want to be closer to the Savior and I want my family to be closer to him. I know that Christ died for us & that Heavenly Father has a plan and that all these doctrines do make sense and I know this church is Heavenly Father & Jesus Christ's church. I hope you will also come to a greater love for our Savior!

Hey Kathy, I keep hearing Oprah talk about this book and I thought about reading it, I didn't though because I figured it would probably be something along those lines. I like Oprah but I don't agree with a lot of her beliefs. It is true what you say because so many people believe anything she says, that when she promotes things like this, or say, political candidates, it can be scary. I still like to watch some of her shows, but I just keep remembering that my dad used to call Oprah the devil (joking)but he might not have been too far off.

Hmmm, that is so interesting. I hadn't planned on reading it, because I figured it's as earth-shattering as she touts it to be, we probably already have a better version within the gospel. It surprises me how hard people try to find "truth" from profit-motivated people. I am going to keep my eyes peeled for more critiques/opinions about this book.

I disagree with you 100%. This book is excellent, and it works for all beliefs. It is a universal truth that works with anyone's belief system. It is teaching people to reach within themselves and find inner peace. This works differently for everyone, be that God, Buddha or simply consciousness, and Tolle has found a way to reach everyone. He is the farthest from the Antichrist you can possibly get. He teaches nothing but love, isn't that what Christ did? This book has done nothing but strenghthen our faith in our own gospel, and I'm sorry you feel so strongly the opposite.

Well Stacy I don't know where to begin. I am glad you got something out of it. And yes I have only read parts of it, but when people say Christ is not the only way to Spirituality, that kinda scares me. I will have to look into it a little more. Just remember that Satan uses a little bit of the truth mixed with things that are false to deceive us.

I was wondering about Stacy's opinion when I first read your post. I am quite intrigued by your disagreement! I respect both of your opinions so much... I feel like a fence-sitter b/c on the one hand if it's bringing people closer to Christ/love, then that's positive, but if it has pieces that are false, or even grossly false, then I want to steer clear. I know very little about the book, except what I have heard from Oprah, Stacy, and you, Kathy. For me it comes down to this - if it is a self-help book, then great, but if it crosses the line into religious territory, then I start to get annoyed. I must say I am definitely going to do a little more investigation for my own benefit on this book!

I just wanted you to know that I agree with you and thank you for posting your beliefs. Sometimes I think I don't stand up for what I know is true enough. I have a lot of really good friends and several family members who are inactive or who aren't members of our church and sometimes I think I am so worried about hurting their feelings that I don't stand up for what I truly believe enough. The truth is that Salvation can only come through Jesus Christ and "there is no other way nor means whereby man may be saved."

Interesting comments, everyone. I've read the book and have to agree with Stacy. Tolle basically teaches how to silence the the negative voice that complains and tells you you aren't enough, etc.
Learning how to be still - to be present - as he teaches, is definitely a good way to invite the spirit to dwell within you. And, as we know, the more often we can invite the spirit, the more prepared we become to receive more truths, (like the gospel) are we not?
Let's not forget that we are taught in the church to seek out truths wherever we can find them ("seek ye out the best books")- not forgetting that our foundation lies in the gospel. Our testimonies and the spirit should guide us as we do this, telling us what is truth and what is fallacy.
If we only looked to the scriptures for the truths - though one can't go wrong in doing so - we are not allowing for our full learning potential while we are here on earth.
The scriptures are meant to be our guide, and companion - helping us to recognize other truths as we come across them.
When I read "other books," more often than not I have to "translate" what their message is in gospel terms - and we need to realize that we really do speak a different language in the gospel and understand they these authors don't have the vocabulary - or understanding themselves to word things any better. They simply do the best they can with what knowledge and understanding they have. Imagine how much more powerful his book might have been, had he written it from a gospel standpoint!
I believe Heavenly Father inspires all people - not just us chosen few in the gospel - to touch and uplift others lives. Perhaps people like Tolle were given the gifts they have to help prepare the way for the gospel.
So, let's look at the fruits of this book - is it helping people's lives or hurting them? Is it bringing them to Christ - or at least an awareness of their spirituality or is it causing confusion within?
I think this book helps people get in touch with their spirituality - even just an awareness that they have a spirit (or consciousness as he calls it) is a good step in preparing them for more truth - maybe even the gospel - AND the understanding one can receive from this book can strengthen their understanding of the gospel - in a very personal way.
